my friend ASL is town and she texted me earlier like, do you want to go to jay z tonight? and i'm all, yeah!

at some point i completely buried my enthusiasm for the (FREE) event to come and i couldn't tell you why. maybe because i didn't want to get too psyched in case it didn't pan out. but it panned out, alright. super small venue, etc. and come time, i decided i was the biggest jay z fan ever! but in the way that everyone there probably decided they were the biggest jay z fan ever! because who is more huge than jay z? like... universally so?

anyway.

there was a new game being demo'd in lieu of their sponsorship for the evening. dj hero or something it's called? they had guitar hero guys doing their moves on stage and after that a serious dj set commenced whilst they prepped the stage. and then the beat changed and, for real, journey dont stop believin was being sampled over top of lady gaga pokerface and my brain almost expoded.

but then the lights went down and then there was jay z and every single hand was up either to take an iphone photo or to rock the diamond hand formation (see above). which, by the way, fall out boy also uses? or their fans do? and once upon a time i saw fall out boy and jay z opened the show and then he and beyonce were in the vip section nearby where i was sitting for free. but note, at the free grizzly bear concert in williamsburg two weekends ago he and beyonce chilled right in the audience. just sayin!

at one point jay z got super psyched and announced he was going to forgo the 45 minutes he was asked to perform and make it an hour and fifteen. oh no he didn't! so he took a minute while saying he was going to take a minute and picked out some new jams. and then started up again. and by the way, he's from brooklyn and he loves it and loves people from brooklyn. hey, so do i.

at one point the fire alarm went off and shut down the whole show. jay z put a towel on his head and chilled a bit and made sure the crowd kept it cool. and the crowd kept it cool because he said so. and when he came back on and it was all almost over and he was thanking everyone he slammed everyone in the upper v.i.p seats saying they were bourg-y and that he's allowed to be bourg-y but even he's not that bourg-y.

(how the hell am i supposed to spell bourgy? bourgie? bougey? bourgey? boojy? .... )

but seriously, who is universally more huge than jay z who is alive and awesome? and that show had nothing but good vibes. and some guy told me i was rich and hot. which i mention only so i can remember it forever.

there's a lot to love about this photo.

though it forces me to (yet again) become nostalgic for the schwinn i probably erroneously sold earlier this summer in the wake of getting a new bike. note to self: in the future you can have as many clunky bikes as there are sign posts!

I bought a NEW bicycle this weekend. And I do mean NEW! My love for vintage will sail onward into eternity but my Schwinn was as bogus as it gets. Once I rode the glorious NEWness there was no turning back. NEW! All NEW! And then I ordered the above glorious NEW "saddle" this morning. I will count down the cold, wintry days until it gets here. It is, yet again, an unlikely purchase for someone like me, but the sales are plentiful in this economy and I decided I had to have it. A NEW saddle!

My latest thoughts have turn towards our next travel destination and I think it's going to be a doozy. I've got a little something cooking for the month of June but I want to avoid jinxing it just yet. My better half is a little concerned about time and commitment whilst he's on the verge of greatness but I think we could make it work. And I actually think the timing can be perfect! And then I also have this fantasy of going for a weekend jaunt at some point. But that might be greedy.

I have abandoned all thoughts of further ski adventuring in lieu of the rumored permanent brain damage and/or death N. Richardson.

here's what i would like to do: start tallying my day's activities again.

we are back from morocco. it was an adventure in a true sense. there are literally thousands of photos waiting to be both downloaded and developed. it's the in between time where i lose motivation. it was a terrific getaway. very action packed while still relaxing. after a week being back i am feeling very sentimental.

and in other news, we are going public: we are expecting a little friend named petey to enter our lives in a few short weeks. i am excited and petrified. and what i need to note here is that petey's current caregiver most definitely sent me a photo of his sister... accidentally? so i have very little to share.

i miss gordy though. every day.

my mom was here. i'll spare the details.

and meanwhile there is a sale at every store you can think of. but it does not seem fun to buy.

Barack Obama attracted 100,000 people in St. Louis, Missouri, his biggest crowd ever at a U.S. event.

The crowd assembled under the Gateway Arch on a sunny Saturday afternoon to hear Obama speak about taxes and slam the Republicans on economic issues.

Lt. Samuel Dotson of the St. Louis Police Department confirmed the number of attendees piled into the grassy lawn by the Mississippi River.

To be sure, big crowds don’t always signal a big turnout on Election Day. But Obama’s ability to draw his largest audience yet in a typically red state that just weeks ago looked out of reach, could signal a changing electoral map.

For months Missouri polls put Obama as much as ten percentage points behind Republican John McCain. It was widely believed that McCain’s pick of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate would have won over the state’s conservatives and boosted his chances there. So far, that hasn’t happened.

A Rasmussen poll released on Friday shows Obama leading in Missouri 52% to 46% for McCain.

Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill had harsh words for Palin when she introduced Obama on Saturday. Referring to comments Palin made earlier this week in North Carolina about “pro-America” states, McCaskill said “We have reached a new low in America politics when a candidate dares to say that one part of America is pro-America and another part is anti-America.”

She also took a dig at McCain for selecting a vice presidential nominee with limited experience. “One [candidate] picked one of the strongest candidates for vice president he could’ve picked in the United States and well, the other didn’t.”

Recognizing that big rallies don’t always result in cast ballots, the Obama campaign has dispatched thousands of field organizers and volunteers to Missouri to knock on doors in a statewide get out the vote effort.

MIDDLETOWN -- A Middletown woman is accused of being disorderly in public -- while wearing a cow suit.

A police report filed about the incident said Michelle Allen allegedly chased children in her neighborhood while wearing the suit on Monday evening.

Allen also urinated on a neighbor's front porch, the report said, and was warned by officers to go home and stay there.

Allen was charged with disorderly conduct after an officer found her causing traffic problems on North Verity Parkway.

The officer's report stated that Allen was verbally abusive to him on the trip to jail and smelled of alcohol.

The report did not speculate as to why Allen was wearing the cow suit.

I am failing at sleep right now. Infuriating for many reasons, including the fact that I just spent a day in a state of total exhaustion. My mind full of nonsense. An email I sent but hours ago to a frustrating hired hand makes me feel what I hope is an unwarranted sense of doom. Other stupid things/people coming out in the wash work wise which feels good but then feels... dirty. Feeling very worn down and prickly with guilt.

Also failing miserably at friendship and correspondence... but that's nothing new.

Failing at ridding myself of whatever it is I so happen to read up on... candida, toxic waste, evil sugar addictions.

Failing to know what I am working towards but working towards it all the while.

Today I declare that my life greatly improved all thanks to newly acquired material possessions. I SAID IT.

I'll also take this moment to bask in the glory of the possessions I already own. And I mostly mean my clothes. Because I am entirely shallow. And other things like air conditioning.

Work is done for the week and that is also a very good thing. We just came from watching our dog walker (et al) perform improv. Some of it definitely "blew my mind". And that, by the way, is supposedly a very Nadia phrase. Which I am not entirely proud of.

Other than that, Gordy and I have many terrific plans in store for I-D 08 but it's likely going to rain all weekend as it's been known to do THIS ENTIRE SUMMER. We will all grow amphibious in the wake of global warming.

I have been feeling a little bit sad that I have been so quiet on here. The realities of my situation are that I was all these things: busy, uninspired, without photos, too much to say, too little to say, and a broken Safari. And Safari is the only thing that will do!

Since my last communications, the huz has returned. He is now very professional. But last week we unexpectedly flew to Michigan to attend funeral services of what is now my grandfather in law. If nothing else, I think my fear of death related gatherings has subsided a little bit. Mainly because 8 hours of solid chit chat around a dead body (god rest his soul!) will do that to a person. It was a romantic funeral, as strange as it sounds because he was 90something years old with a wife who still loved him and cried that he was gone. After 70 years of marriage. Beautiful!

Additionally, there have been many more hot days, the renegade craft fair, the rain, the dog bowl, the anniversaries (seven years together and one year legal marriage), a birthday for my beloved, many blockbuster films, newly purchased air conditioning and... so on.

This weekend: the Fourth of July and all the compromises that always come with that.

Creativity at an absolute standstill. I blame the heat. And the fact I am still without fabric. A wife who weeps.

I have to admit, after a few days I've sort of embraced the so called "single life". There is a certain peacefulness to the whole thing... quiet when I want quiet, bad music when I want bad music, freedom to keep my own schedule, to sleep when I want, eat when I want, make a mess and not clean it up, or start to clean it up at all hours of the night or... in the case of this particular evening, to try on my wedding dress again!!! Whee!

The first realization is that there is a gigantic stain right on the front of it. What would cause such a thing? It's basically rust colored. But primarily on the inner layer of netting which strikes me as being a little mysterious. I am wondering if this is something that just happens to things never cleaned and improperly stored or if it's remnants from the drunken romp that was my wedding night in Mexico.

And the second realization is that I LOOK AWESOME. And if you know me, you know this is a mind boggling statement from yours truly. I have bitched about this dress not fitting me on the day of my wedding for over a year. And I will admit to you right now that up until I arrived in MX, I was eating more carefully, doing the this and the that. And that once I arrived, I ate chips, tacos, guac, queso, beer, margarita, waffle, yadda yadda. On my wedding day in particular I consumed all manner of liquor and saltiness from the moment I awoke... nary a glass of water or sign of physical exertion to speak of. And I paid the price, my friends. Paid it in photos, paid it in regrets, paid it in tears! Oh poor me. Whatever.

Anyway it makes me realize that I ought to romanticize things a little bit more in my memories. Because I am maybe just being negative for no reason other than the finality of it all. But weddings are such a mindfuck. Let's face it.

Meanwhile, a good friend is getting married in August. That's partially why the ol' dress and all its mental and emotional implications have come out of the closet. But I am looking forward to this wedding. Just last night I finally found shoes to wear with my bright yellow bridesmaid dress. And blah blah blah.... Weddings!

In other news, work almost killed me today. And then ended on an unexpected upswing circa 10pm. Two shoots tomorrow, tons of work to catch up on, still not sewing at all.....

Oh, Weezer.

I would first like to note that this is one of the worst photos of all time. My cup runneth over. Such that I can't even be bothered to list my endless reasoning. I would also like to note that Rivers now sort of looks like my uncle.

Weezer's new album - "THE RED ALBUM" (barf) - is out tomorrow and I barely care. But I will probably still buy it. Because I have to. Because I spent the entirety of my formative years O-B-S-E-S-S-E-D with this band and it's possible that they, along with the wonders of the internet (HOLLAH IRC!), are the reason that I am where I am today. And you don't know how serious I am about that. SAD BUT TRUE.

In other news, I am sober and alone. The no drinking thing is a breeze and I have contemplated keeping it up for the rest of my life. As far as being alone goes, I am nearly devastated. Errr! It's really only for two weeks. But that's sort of a long time for the fully domesticated spouse that I just the day before yesterday realized I have become! Pathetic, pitiful, these are the words. And little Gordy kept me on pins and needles all night barking at every little sound. Maybe he's stepping in as the man of the house?

What would be nice is if I were productive. And if I went grocery shopping. And if I wasn't such a tool.

memorial days

Florida, as seen from my mother's door, as seen through the sophisticated lense of my iphone.

It almost killed me. What with its hot-as-balls heat, its shellfish, its wine, its rednecks. So begins a three week hiatus from all things wine and beer, so help me jesus.

It was a swell time, all things considered. It's always nice to hit reset once in awhile and and make yourself get used to how the rest of the country/world interacts. And in this case I guess I mean neon colors, intense customer service, crotchedy retirees, bad jokes. But seriously, it was pleasant - LOOK AT MY VIEW! The water sparkled on the ceilings for me every morning.

And in the end I (hopefully) replaced my sewing machine's mysteriously MIA power cord, scored some sandals, a dress, a romper. The latter of which I wore when I almost gave myself alchohal poisoning on Sunday so it's a little tarnished in my eyes, but nevertheless...

And now I am back. After waking up at 5something am, sleeping on the plane, and crawling to work. I feel only slightly less like barfing.

A friend has given me the contact infos for fixing the Husqvarna but I have not yet sealed the deal.
Luxurious sample yardage has been chosen and fingers have been crossed in hopes of it arriving before next year.. err.
It will not be HELGE (!!). It could be JEUNE. Huh?

We made it out to the photo festival (NYPH) which did not disappoint. If you haven't gone yet, it's too late.

I have also (shallowly) decided that I definitely miss having long hair.

This is the new item in question. I can't help it. I really regretted not having a better camera in Iceland (or was it that I regretted being too lazy, too in the moment to carry around my SLR?). And then sometimes I still have fantasies where I am creative and taking interesting photos all the while. Like the huz, sort of. But more as a project.

But also I need to pay some major debts and also get the old Husqvarna Viking serviced. And and and. There is also the disapproving glare I will get if I just charge it and don't earn it or sell something or... something.

But what about W's rebate? Maybe?

I can't stop thinking about ittttttttttttttt. The internet is not helping me on this day.

I say it all the time but wouldn't it be nice if I actually started sewing again? Put my university skills to use? Most of the time it's not even a consideration as I genuinely have a truthful awareness of what goes into "simple garments". It's tempting though. I need to be doing SOMETHING... to say the least. Poor Helge. I didn't even bother to apply to Renegade this year.

In other news, another slow week. It would be more joyful if the weather was a bit nicer. The rain kept me in a coma for the majority of it ... and actually, it's only Thursday. Today I am still in an indian food toxic hangover. I really need to realize it might do me well not to eat garbage even if it's free, even if it's there.

Over the course of last week I was boozing it up (oh you know it!) with pink wine at least two nights. The final night being Friday in which the details became verrrrry foggy towards the end. I do remember waking up in a state of frustration multiple times because I was inexpliably sleeping flat on my stomach (once on the couch, fully clothed including my coat) and then a mysterious dream where I became positive I had lost either my phone or my wallet. Which became a sort of subconscious awareness of the latter because as of now my wallet still remains M.I.A. I then vowed never to drink again.

And I went to the dentist and got slapped on the wrist for this and that. And then they gave me blue glasses and offered me a list of movies to watch whilst they cleaned me up. What is it about the dentist that compells me to lie? That and yoga. I will never admit my lack of daily floss or lack of experience.

Otherwise I am a total bum.

Test Card F is a test card that was created by the BBC and used on television in the United Kingdom and in countries elsewhere in the world for more than four decades. Like other test cards, it was usually shown while no programmes were being broadcast, but was the first to be transmitted in colour in the UK and the first to feature a person,[1] and has become an iconic British image and is regularly subject to parody.

The central image on the card shows an eight-year-old girl, Carole Hersee, playing noughts and crosses with a clown doll Bubbles the Clown, surrounded by various greyscales and colour test signals needed to ensure a correct picture. It was first broadcast on 2nd July 1967 (the day after the first colour pictures appeared to the public on television) on BBC2.

The card was developed by a BBC engineer, George Hersee, father of Carole Hersee, the girl in the central image. The good news is that previously disastrous, doomsday-like thoughts have subsided in the wake of shorter working hours, summery weather, and midday walks. So what I am trying to say is that I am still afloat. Which is a very good thing.

Last night we went to a bit of Icelandic Cultural Hour (as I called it) in the form of Hjaltalin and Mum performing at some theater space. Don't even bother to say it, I already know I am obsessed. The truth of the matter is that I borderline stalked the former as they just so HAPPENED to be on the flight with us and I just so HAPPENED to read about their lead singer/songwriter (who I now claim to be in love with) in the Reykjavik Grapevine we took back with us and this band just so HAPPENED to have been nominated for 5 music awards recently and when I looked them up on line they just so HAPPENED to be playing in New York in two days. And I decisively made a purchase to attend. Which, if you know me, you'll note is a rarity these days. REGARDLESS, I am sort of blown away. Like maybe the very best show I have seen in a long while?! Oh, Icelandia.

Today a shoot I worked on (in the loosest sense) came accompanied with a story from the photographer of the subject in question... crying.

And in other news I am as vapid and shallow as usual but trying a little bit harder not to watch as much tv (Gossip Girl being an exception) and be productive. Which, at 10:30 is coming thirty minutes away from my bedtime. It's the least I can do.

We are back from Iceland since Friday. Since then have been trying to be a bit more mentally productive. Still uncertain as to whether or not Helge will ever come back to life but am trying to be optimistic that, at the very least, I will think of things to do outside of work, work, work.

Very inspired by the music of the Icelanders... both to listen to (and not watch television and therefore to read or think) and to spend money on CDs and tickets (and not just on them).

Tomorrow is back to the miserable gray cubicle - which I am lucky to have? - and I am really realizing that most of what I'll dread about being back there centers on the fact that everyone is unhappy and I'm not particularly inspired to challenge myself... a.k.a. to fail. Which is a very negative outlook, I realize.

Still fantasizing about moving far away.

Birthdays suck sometimes but in retrospect seem pretty great.

Blood, sweat, and tears are currently being shed working on "side projects". Can't wait to not have work to do and to work on my own stuff. Which is different.

working on a set for a video has inspired me to explore other methods of construction and fabrication outside of the usual spectrum i'd normally employ. whatever. so much to learn.

but what i really want to type here (for the purpose of remembering) is that i would love to embrace mobiles again. i think it's the only way.

cut out paper, cut what else out?, use elements of embroidery, stuffed yak with water color, paint samples, bones, baby stuff, etc.

actually it ruins it when i write it out but i have to force myself not to forget.

Without stating the obvious, having wholesale inquiries really forces a person to step out of their creative isolation and actually work out boring technicalities. Which is hard sometimes in the world of HELGE because a lot of it is limited edition or moments in time which I don't want to overly think out.

Regardless, I am refining the "Premiere Collection" (which is actually something like the third or fourth, whatever) and making its theme be something along the lines of CREATION. The second collection will be more along the lines of MODERN PRACTICALITIES and/or MYSTERIES THEREOF and I guess that will be something like a FALL release? But it seems like CREATION's along the same timeline so maybe it's a big, fat lie and I really want to bury the preggers test forever.

In lieu of all this, it seems like certain pillows/ideas are being put on pause. And I guess that means at least one pillow debuted at Renegade and still in my posession will have been exclusive to that weekend and remain in the vault until it's time.

Renegade proved a good experience for tons of exposure, if nothing else.
Most of the cards are sold out but most never made it onto the site anyway so they'll possibly remain secrets forever.
The site remains down/sparse but we have big plans to add a store, determine wholesale, and add more visuals. Too bad we didn't do it sooner as helgenewyork.com has gotten literally hundreds of hits within the last few days thanks to fair publicity. Hopefully people won't forget about us...

As of today, HELGE AS A WHOLE IS DETERMINED TO "GO GOCCO".
This would be a major... technical advancement for us. Which means we are moving slow as molasses to do it.
What it really comes down it is the BULB investments. If you Gocco, you know what I am talking about.
